Headphones don't work unless they are present at boot time...

I have a Gateway M-152S laptop running Fedora 9 (Gnome and Xfce) and the headphones don't work unless they are connected at boot time. It seems to register them right when udev starts because I hear a little noise in the headphones at that time. If you plug them in at any time afterward, they do NOT work.

Any ideas on what I can do to be able to get them to work if I plug them in at a later time rather than restarting?

Just a thought, but if they aren't being spotted when you plug them in, could it be that the HAL demon is not running? Check "System - Adminstration - Services" in the menu to see.
