HDMI problem with openSUSE Leap 15.4 kernel

On the laptop
LENOVO ThinkPad E15 Gen 4 21E60050GE.
I have installed openSUSE Leap 15.4.
Its kernel 5.14.21-150400.24.41-default does not properly support HDMI,
so I added
i915.force\_probe=46a8
as kernel command line parameter. This worked. Now I am looking for
a more stable solution. I added the repository
kernel-repo https://download.opensuse.org/reposi...HEAD/standard/
to zypper. Before I run
sudo zypper dist-upgrade -r kernel.repo
I would like to understand what really happens.

* A dry-run listed 34 problems whether a number of kernel-firmware files
should be de-installed or retained.
I did not know what to answer.
* Can I undo this upgrade and revert to the present installation?
* Should I remove i915.force\_probe=46a8 before or after the upgrade?

For openSUSE Leap, you are best advised to use backported kernel from
http://download.opensuse.org/reposit...port/standard/

A recent wiki page added with further info

Just boot from the older kernel if required.

After the new kernel is installed, you can make any changes to the boot parameter as required, then reboot. I don't think this parameter would cause problems if invoked with the new kernel though.

Some additional information for you regarding multiversion kernel support

HDMI problem with OpenSUSE leap 15.4 kernel

Thank you ferrari,
I did as you suggested and installed the repository

backport.repo https://download.opensuse.org/reposi...port/standard/

with zypper. Now

sudo zypper dup -Dr backport.repo

yields two types of errors.

Some 37 errors concerning kernel-firmware of the type

Problem: Problem mit dem installierten kernel-firmware-all-20220509-150400.4.13.1.noarch

and

Problem: Problem mit dem installierten elfutils-0.185-150400.5.3.1.x86_64
Lösung 1: elfutils-0.177-lp153.16.1.x86_64 von Hersteller obs://build.opensuse.org/Kernel installieren
und elfutils-0.185-150400.5.3.1.x86_64 von Hersteller SUSE LLC <https://www.suse.com/> ersetzen
Lösung 2: veraltetes elfutils-0.185-150400.5.3.1.x86_64 beibehalten

If need be I could translate these messages into English.
What do you advise me to do?

Thanks again
Peter

Use 'export LC_ALL=C <command>' to obtain English output. For example...
Code:
export LC_ALL=C zypper dup
BTW, the advanced forum editor includes a '#' button for posting code. It preserves the formatting so makes it easier for helpers to read.

The wiki page I pointed you at doesn't mention using 'zypper dup'. Instead, it mentions using
Code:
zypper refresh
zypper search -sx kernel-default
then install with
Code:
zypper install kernel-default-<listed-version-to-install>
specifying the exact version required.

HDMI problem with openSUSE leap 15.4

concerning the zypper install command, I was reluctant. That is something i have never done before
and i feel completely out off my depth.
zypper search -sx kernel-default gives the result
Code:
zypper search -sx kernel-default

I assumed that you're trying to install the kernel offered by the backport repo...
Code:
sudo zypper in kernel-default-6.1.11-lp154.2.1.g16a4964

BTW, you should disable or remove that kernel repo you added.
