after partitioning my laptop, installed windows on drive c and deleting the
logical drive to auto partition for linux, the installation was smooth but
the computer will hang during startup when it displays:
Freeing unused kernel memory : 136K
using laptop. anyone know wad's the prob? have tried manual and auto
partitioning
have tried removing windows and installing linux only and still same prob
using 9.0 and 8.0 still the same
Just thought I'd chip in -- I have the same problem. It would be good to know if anyone recognises this problem.
I've installed Mandrake 9.1 on a new partition. Seems to boot ok (handles the dual boot with Win 98 - install ok), but just hangs after the "freeing unused kernel memory" messsage.
im having the same problem, except im trying to install EvilEntity and it stalls just after loading all the devices(just before the first install prompt I think), with the last line being the same as the above posters.
has any one found a solution?
Hi, I've had the same problem today.
My machine was working fine, then it crashed, I got the mesage, and nothing was happening after that, anybody knows the cause for this? or solution.
I was able to bring my system up, only by formating the / partition and reinstalling the OS.
What can I do to prevent it in the future any feedback would be great.
So, everyone is joining the fellowship.
I just have installed zipslack and configured it using the boot disks, then I booted using the slackware installation disk with the option root=/dev/hda3 and it hanged on me after freeing unused kernel memory, I have a Toshiba 490 satellite pro
I have the same same problem. I've installed LFS on my desktop computer for 'server' (AMD K6-2).
Desktop computer boots well with no errors. But when booting on my K6 - it hangs on "Freeing unused kernel memory". Does anyone know what the problem is? I am stuck...
When I booted from linux boot disk (some "small" linux distribution) - I got the same problem when specified kernel parameters
root=/dev/hda3 ro
When I booted completely from floppy and tried to
#mount /dev/hda3 /mnt/host
#chroot /mnt/host
I got message "Illegal instruction". Digging deeper I found that this message appeared when system was trying to execute /bin/bash. That means that bash (and some other parts of system, init for example) was compiled with instructions not supported by my K6, only on Duron.
Thought I would add my plea for help. Seems like this happens often, and doesn't have much hope. I actually did move my hard drive from an older AMD K-6 to an AMD Athon 900 Mhz board and get this error now. I reinstalled over the last one, but did not reformat as I have some info I don't want to lose. Could this be the prob? I am wondering that the kernel is configured wrong, but I thought by reinstalling it would be configured right? How can I insure that it is configured right for the new board? Is it a question of swamp memory? Any ideas?
if you have any problems with the RPM reinstall, ie "operation not permitted", its probably your /sbin/init being immutable, that is the file has the attribute i, (check wiht lsattr [filename]), this attribute needs to be removed with chattr -i [filename] to allow it to be overwritten
quick summary:
1: boot in rescue cd
2: mount drive
3: chroot to drive
4: reinstall SysVinit (rpm -ivh --force [rpm file]
===== if probs chattr problem files
5: reboot
note : i found that probably the easiest way to copy the rpm to the machone is using scp
