FC6 laptop, external speakers not working

Merry christmas everybody,

I have been using FC6 now for sometime without any problems. However I have just tried to plug some external speakers into my laptop and all I get is silence... I have checked the speakers are turned on and the volume is turned up I have tried them on another machine (not a laptop) and they work fine.

I can hear everything fine without the speakers plugged in but that isn't what I want.

Thanks in advance.

Need more details. What brand/model laptop? What is the sound controller? What version of Alsa?

It's likely a simple fix to alsa, or just a matter of upgrading the alsa-driver (FC6 uses an older version).
