Error Report

Afternoon:

I'm encountering many, many, many, many problems with LM17 working properly. I installed it last Aug. and almost every week there is something going wrong. This is the latest:

E: Encountered a section with no Package: header
E: Problem with Mergelist /ver/lib/apt/lists/archive-getdeb.net_ubuntu_dists_trusty-getdeb_apps_i18n_Translation-en
E: The package lists or status files couldn't be parsed or opened

Next, in recovery mode: NETWORK> Modem Manager[2147]:<warn> Couldn't find support for device @ '/sys/devices/pci0000: 00/0000: 00: /c.2/0000:02: 00.0' not supported by any plug-in

Right now, I'm having problems with Soundjuicer when ripping and have had from the initial installation of LM17, also, cannot get integrated webcam to operate. I'd like to tell of all the things that have gone wrong since this install, but it would be a far too extensive list. I've checked and it's not a corrupted(?) O.S. according to MD5sum. I cannot express the aggrivation this has caused me. It seems I'm on this, and many other, forums EVERY week with another problem. I've wiped the Hdd and re-installed LM17 several times and still the problems. I hope there is someone who can help out and correct ALL the problems. There has to be something missing/not installed/not configured, something crucial but simple( I believe) but I haven't a clue to what it might be. Hope you do!!!!
Thank You: [HP2000-210 LM17 cinnamon 64bit]
Rick

They may be benign error messages. Did you tried other distros Live-cd? Post what sort of hardware you have. It may help.

ADDENDUM TO POST#1:

It was not a benign post. I couldn't get Soundjuicer to "rip", nor can I "uninstall" it! I've tried other O.S's, but only in "live" for I didn't want to install them. My laptop's hardware? I'm certain this is a software issue! However, I'll post the laptop's spec's:

O.S.: LinuxMint 17.1 Cinnamon 64bit Cinnamon Version: 2.4.6 Linux Kernel: 3.13.0-24-generic Processor: Intel Pentium CPU P6200@ 2.13 GHz x2 Memory: 2.8Gb Hdd: 74Gb Graphics Card: Intel Corp.Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller The laptop is a HP2000-210 notebook. If you should require any further hardware specs, please be specific. If you need to read "error reports and system readouts" check back over my multitude of "posts" of this forum site. If you do not see what your looking for, please inquire and I'll respond.
I NEED to get this fixed and fixed now. This has gone on far TOO long (over 6 months). I'd appreciate only relevant responses. Not being curt, but I've had enough of this B.S.!
Thanx:
Rick

Please try a new live-dvd of fedora21. Your kernel is quite old. Lets see if it works.

For webcam can you post the output of lspci and lsusb to find out what hardware it is. Have you added your user to video group.

Have you tried cd-paranoia to rip audio-cds.

REPLY TO veerain:

Thank you for your indulgence. I did get soundjuicer working by going into MENU>software sources>maintenance>fix MergeList>update the cache> sudo apt-get update: however, as previously, SJ works for about 3 'rips", then crashes. I then have to uninstall/re-install and go through the entire process repeatedly. You asked for a couple of readouts and I'll now post them:

I do not understand this question: "Have you added your user to video group"???? No, I've not tried cd-paranoia. I'll do so this weekend. I hope these 2 readouts give you an explanation for the difficulties this laptop experiences. If not, do you have any idea of where we could go to try to get this figured out and corrected?

ADDENDUM to ERROR REPORT:

I installed Asunder via the terminal and added the FLAC and LAME packages. Ripped a CD and. so far, it ran flawlessly. I'll do more ripping, then report back with my experience. I'm still seeking help with making the webcam operational.

If Sound Juicer runs fine as root but not as a regular user that you have to add the regular user to groups.
There are several groups that the user should belong to in order for applications and programs to work.
http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/howto-l...user-to-group/

Until I added a user to the cdrom group I couldn't burn DVD's. Here's an example:-
Code:
usermode -G cdrom (username)
As far as your Web Cam is concerned LM comes with "Cheese" that should work with your Web Cam.
http://community.linuxmint.com/software/view/cheese

Is the application installed on your distribution? If not it should be in 'Synaptic Package Manager'.

I see that almost all of the hardware on your mobo is Intel Corporation technology. My Sony Vaio is too and I have noticed that Red Hat based distributions run well with Intel technology. Other distributions (Ubuntu based especially) that I have tried on this Vaio doesn't play nice with Linux for some reason. (could just be a proprietary issue)

-::-Try another distribution like suggested above.-::-

Fedora XFCE ran great for me for 3 years and CentOS runs exceptionally well.-

Both lspci and lsusb output doesn't says you have a webcam present.

I searched for HP 2000-210 but didn't found. But I got specs for HP 2000-210US.

It says a HP Webcam in the Box.

Do you have the webcam integrated with laptop or an external one?

REPLY TO Ztcoracat & veerain:

Thanx for weighing in! My apologies to veerain~ Yes, it's an integrated webcam..and yes, you're correct the full model # is 2000-210US. Ztcoracat has provivded a link for this particular webcam's specs...http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc..._Notebook.html

Ztcoracat: Many Thanx for the link. No, do not confuse (which many have) the "mini"(model # 210-2000) with my laptop (model 2000-210US). They are 2 completely different comps. I would like to add that should Asunder perform admirably,(so far it has) then I'll just discard SJ.

Thumbs up Error Report

Response to Ztcoracat (& veerain):

Your suggesting LM17 is not HP "friendly"? You know, your the second person that has made that observation. Personally, I never knew an O.S. could be vendor specific, or exclusive, for that matter. I do have Xubuntu 10.04 on a jump drive and am going to run it once again. That is what I started out on w/the linux/ubuntu distro and it worked well, for me, albeit on another HP(32bit)laptop.
Perhaps I'll try Fedora or Redhat, or both in 'live". Do you suggest any particular distro? Here are the specs on my laptop:
HP 2000-210US--74Gb Hdd--2.8 Gb RAM and as you noticed, most of the hardware is "intel". Someone also noticed the O.S I'm running has an "old" kernel. but, unless I'm wrong, I believe LM17.1 is running the latest kernel(?)[3.13.0-24-generic] But, by far, the biggest problem I'm encountering is getting the integrated webcam operable. Looks like I should take some time and run these other distro's and see how they perform? In the meantime, have any ideas about the failure of the webcam operation? Oh, Yes, "Cheese" is the default app for LM17, but I've tried guvcview and VLC and they both fail and report errors as well. Hey, I'm always open to helpful suggestions/critical analysis.
Thanx:
Rick

It's possible that Mint doesn't want to play nice with the HP or the Intel technology.

I haven't been able to get any other distro's but Fedora and CentOS to run on my Sony Vaio.
All the other distributions fail to function properly and crash.
It's not the HDD.

Quote:

You could give Fedora or CentOS a try.
CentOS is the free version of RH.

Red Hat is a Server class distribution primarily for the enterprise. I don't recommend it for a laptop. Some things (keyboard or mouse) may not work properly.

Yes Mint is using kernel 3.13.0-24.
Code:
@linuxcat-MS-7501 ~ $ uname -a
Linux 7501 3.13.0-24-generic #46-Ubuntu SMP Thu Apr 10 19:11:08 UTC 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Without knowing the exact error messages I can't really say what it could be.
You might want to post the error message.

Error report

Morning Ztcoracat:

Hmm, well, then I guess it's time to give Fedora a 'go". I'm not familiar with CentOS? Perhaps I should look into it as well. Just for the purpose of diagnosis, here are the error readouts of each webcam app:
CHEESE: No Device Found VLC: VLC is unable to open the MRL 'v4l2://'. Check the log for details. (not sure what LOG they are refering to) Guvcview: Unable to open device. Please make sure camera is connected and that the correct driver is installed.{Well, don't have to "connect" camera for it's integrated, however, knowing which 'driver" is required and checking for it's installation is not something I've been able to accomplish....yet!} So, I'm off to D/l Fedora, put it on a pendrive in "live" and see how it performs. Will check out CentOS as well. Thank you for all the help/advice. I'm still puzzled by Linux/Ubuntu indifference w/ HP & Intel hardware. I'm wondering if it should be brought to the attention of the 'developers/programmers".

What has me baffled is that your webcam doesn't even show in the output of lspci or lsusb.
I couldn't be able to find the module or the driver name with the "find" command becuase I'm not sure what cam you have and since it's not showing that makes it even more difficult to tell.

Code:
No Device Found VLC: VLC is unable to open the MRL 'v4l2://'.
This sounds like a driver issue.
I would of thought that the kernel would be providing support (a module/driver) for your webcam.
http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Webcam-HOWTO/hardware.html

Your could try opening VLC and go to Media> Open Capture Device and see if your webcam is listed.
If not see if it's in the drop down list and see if VLC will work with your webcam.

I am too and I haven't be able to figure out why I can only run Red Hat based on this Vaio with Intel technology.
I've tried other distributions and things just don't function properly or at all. (keyboard & mouse and horrible graphics) I really thing it's a proprietary thing. That's Sony for you:-

Your might be able to write to a developer here.

Sorry I don't know more.

I hope for you that Fedora or CentOS works on your laptop.-
