Cannot "sleep" or "hibernate" my Thinkpad X61 Tablet

If I try to "sleep" or "hibernate" my Thinkpad tablet running Ubuntu Karmic, all I get is a blinking "new moon" LED and cannot wake my system without a full power-off.

I have 4GB system RAM and do not have a swap file or partition. Is that a requirement for "sleep" or "hibernate?" Are there other configuration requirements that I don't know about [very likely]?

Both "sleep" and "hibernate" worked fine under Ubuntu Hardy.

Please help,
~~~ 0;-Dan
... I cannot possibly have problems
[SOLVED]
This must work for everyone so their reaction to the question must be, "... that can't possibly be going on ..."
Since I must be dreaming, how do I mark this thread SOLVED?
