Cannot boot Toshiba using Knoppix

Hi all.

Have burnt Knoppix 4.0.2 to CD and am trying to start up a Toshiba Satellite Pro 6000. It gets as far as:

"Scanning for harddisk partitions and creating /etc/fstab..."

Have tried running knoppix in nodma, failsafe and noauto mode, all to no avail.

I'm coming to the conclusion that the HDD is knackered - reason for trying to boot from knoppix is that the laptop cannot connect to the network or external USB HDD, etc (svchost probs, but no apparant virus) and I'm trying to get some data off it before wiping/chucking it.

Any thoughts/suggestions appreciated.

Cannot boot Toshiba using Knoppix

Hello,

You can try a older version of the Knoppix to boot the PC.
You can also try the FCCU Gnu/Linux boot CD that is a remastered Knoppix (3.9) (www.d-fence.be)

If it's not possible to boot the PC, you can try a boot with HD disabled in the BIOS and see if the HD is really the source of the problem.

You can try to extract the HD and connect with a adaptor to a other computer and try to acces it.

Good luck.

panic over - have got the data.

I did try an older version (3.3), but got the same results.

Ended up ftp'g the files across to the network (strange this was that command prompt did not work, so had to use IE to ftp files!).

Thanks anyways.
