"Boxed Gui" 600x480

Hello

I need some help with a problem I can't seem to be able to fix.
I've been reading a lot about this but there seems as nobody has got any "bulletproof" answer.

I've been playing with installing Gentoo on my "IBM iSeries" laptop and have now installed the X Window server and when I start X it forces the screen down to a little box which is about 640x480 and I have no idea why. I start the laptop by going into textmode (init 3) and compiled vesa-tng into the kernel which boots up with a default screen size of 1024x768 (I had to change that it was 640x480 at first).

This doesn't seem to be the resolutions because I pushed the resolution up to 1024x768 via "Virtual" but then, again, the screen was forced down to this little box but the image inside the box was 1024x768 and with the help of a mouse (and a scrolling function) I could look at the whole screen (only seeing 640x480 at a time).

It's horrible to work on the computer under these conditions, so can someone please help me as quickly as possible.

Here follows my xorg.conf which I auto-configured:
Code:
Section "ServerLayout"
        Identifier "X.org Configured"
        Screen "Screen0"
        InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer"
        InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
EndSection

Section "Files"
        RgbPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/rgb"
        ModulePath "/usr/X11R6/lib/modules"
        FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/misc/"
        FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/TTF/"
        FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/Type1/"
        FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/CID/"
        FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/75dpi/"
        FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/100dpi/"
EndSection

Section "Module"
        Load "extmod"
        Load "dri"
        Load "dbe"
        Load "record"
        Load "xtrap"
        Load "glx"
        Load "type1"
        Load "freetype"
EndSection

Section "InputDevice"
        Identifier "Keyboard0"
        Driver "kbd"
EndSection

Section "InputDevice"
        Identifier "Mouse0"
        Driver "mouse"
        Option "Protocol" "auto"
        Option "Device" "/dev/mouse"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
        Identifier "LCD"
        Option "DPMS" "true"
EndSection

Section "Device"
        Identifier "Card0"
        Driver "trident"
        VendorName "Trident Microsystems"
        BoardName "CyberBlade/i1"
        BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
        Identifier "Screen0"
        Device "Card0"
        Monitor "LCD"
        SubSection "Display"
                Depth 16
                Modes "1024x768" "800x600"
        EndSubSection
EndSection
With thanks

In the section

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Card0"
Monitor "LCD"
SubSection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "1024x768" "800x600"
EndSubSection
EndSection

remove the "800x600" and see if that helps, the other possiblity is to make depth 8.

Other than that I suggest google to see if its a common problem

Since you didn't mention a specific model of IBM laptop, you should go through this list and find your model. Perhaps there's a documented working config for you to follow.

Thanks, this solved my problem... Now I'm looking at a big screen and enjoying...

For others add the to the "Device section"
Option "extern_disp"
Option "intern_disp"

Wonderful... I'm happy...
