At the grub menu, highlight the first menuentry, press e for edit, add nomodeset at end of line that begins with linux, f10 or ctrl-x to boot.

not sure how to access the GRUB menu anymore but the only option I have is to switch from UEFI to Legacy in the BIOS (F2), that's the only way it'll boot using Ventoy

UPDATE 3:
I tried making a live USB using Ventoy instead, and once I switch the UEFI to Legacy in the BIOS, i am able to boot and access the desktop environment (mouse also functions fine). I have been advised against installing in Legacy mode however, but it seems to be the only option available. Any reccommendations or pointers as to whether it would make a difference installing in Legacy mode?

You will have to use bios boot menu each time to boot in legacy mode. If you have the option to “boot from file” in the bios boot menu should be able to convert to uefi boot mode after installation.

UPDATE 4:
ok so i have been advised against intalling in Legacy mode, so in order to be able to install in UEFI i have to disable Secure Boot after i activate the administrator password in the BIOS, then simply changed the admin password back to nothing. It seems however that most distros simply will not boot in UEFI, i tried booting other distros in both standard and compatability mode and get a black screen in the former and after all the text nothing happens in the latter...the only one that seemed to boot in UEFI so far is AntiX. Unfortunately there is no option to Boot from File in the Boot Menu.

I think you will find Secure boot is certainly the exception and not the rule. I gave up on this thread 12(?) posts back because then it was all talk and nothing was being tried, but you're trying stuff now. I was down this secure boot rabbit hole and I didn't have Secure boot on, but am in 'Setup mode.' Many linuxes will not run at all with secure boot but you can (and apparently everybody does) use setup mode (or equivalent) to boot under UEFI.

So if your usb is good, your process should be:
  1. Hit the "Boot from..." key in whatever pc you have landed on. If you have a good efi partition on the usb, the system should read every valid efi partition and offer you the options.
  2. If ventoy is doing something clever, you may see that instead.

Now I, and I'm sure everyone else wants no summaries but very full descriptions of your input to the box, and what the box does and does not do. If booting was successful, note that. Restrict this thread to booting issues.

What can i say i have no tech skills or knowledge whatsoever, i limit myself to following tutorials while i try to understand along the way. In a previous update i wrote that i was able to boot from Legacy, but trying that again gives me no positive results:
-regardless of whether i boot in normal mode or GRUB2:
-Start Linux Mint Normally: i am able to breifly and move see the mouse before the screen goes black
-Start Linux in Compatability mode: i am finally able to get to the Mint desktop environment but cannot move the mouse

In UEFI with Secure Boot Disalbled on the other hand:
-Start Linux Normally: i am able to briefly see and move the mouse but the screen then goes black
-Start Linux in Compatability mode: at some point the writing stops and nothing happens

Unfortunately writing a step-by-step description of what i have attempted so far is the only way i know to describe my predicament, as i'm not really sure what i'm doing i'm just trying different options, but none seem to work so far

I suggest you ask a friend who knows linux to have a look while you ply him with booze or whatever works wherever in the world you are. You repeatedly say you know nothing
and at this stage I believe you.

At the boot menu highlight the normal menuentry, press e for edit and add video=1024x768 to the end of the line that starts with linux. If that doesn't work add nomodeset to end of the line that starts with linux.
