Asus AMD/Nvidia laptop 2gpus, 2screens many problems

Hey all, been so long that i had to start a new account.

Well here i am with a new laptop, new problems. Problems are:

AMD int. Gpu works fine on the laptop screen and it also has a Nvidia 3060 which I was hoping to use only on an external screen or at a programs request. When i plug in an external via usbc-dp-1, or the HDMI, the Nvidia kicks in. Great right!? The screen works But nothing else does. Try to open Dolphin - it crashes, Desktop settings - crash. No app will open. But it all goes fine as soon as i unplug the external.

It did work for a while and i don't know what changed. by a while i mean a day or two, this is a fresh install.

Details:
Asus Studiobook 16 AMD
Nvidia 3060
2.5k screen, 4k external

Opensuse Tumbleweed

I was initially trying to find a softswitch to change/turn on the diff gpu and also get DaVinci Resolve to start via Nvidia.

Hello again, osbiefeelgood and I'll spare you the customary welcome.

AMD & Nvidia? Not a good combination, imho. If the amd gpu is internal, that may be ok. Both AMD & Nvidia use proprietary drivers, and their own versions of/usr/lib(64)/libGL*.

Amd also has kernel drivers, and Nvidia has nouveau. For my first try, I would use
  • Proprietary drivers for Nvidia
  • Kernel Drivers for AMD
And report on how that goes.

From previous experience, it's difficult if not impossible to disable a built-in gpu. You can disable the Nvidia by depriving it of modules or firmware. The mistake might have been buying an AMD gpu with internal processor, because they are always uninspiring, even AMD's.

You might also explain how you have set the monitors up. Mine were 1600x900 & 1920x1080. I set them as left/right and the virtual screen was 3520(=1600+1920)x1080.
