3d accelleration fail after a while

Hi. I have a compaq evo n 610c laptop, with a radeon 5700 graphics card. My 3d accerlleration works fine both in simply mepis and kubuntu, but after a while it fails. I'm not using the original ATI because then I'm not able to start X.

I belive the graphics card fails after a while because the hardwere detection thinks its a radeon 9700 and not a 5700. If the system changes some setting that only 9700 have the ability to do, then my radeon 5700 loses it's ability to display the 3d graphics.

What I need to know is if my thoughs on the matter might be correct and what I can do to make the computer know that I have a radeon 5700 and NOT a radeon 9700.

And one more thing... should I use xfree86 or xorg.

I am new to linux, so some things you tell me might easely be the same as greek in my mind. please be simple.

Thank for any reply.

P.S. I can start X with out problems when the 3d accelleration fails

If you're logged on machine A and want to copy "foo" from machine A to "dest" on machine B, do:
Code:
scp foo user@B:dest
If you're logged on machine A and want to copy "foo" from machine B to "dest" on machine A, do:
Code:
scp user@B:foo dest
where "user" is the username for machine B.
