1600x1024 resolution possible on laptop?

I'm trying to set my resolution to 1600x1024 (or 1680x1050). I have added mode lines to my xorg.conf to try to get this resolution.

When I look at my Xorg.0.log is says I can't do this:
Code:

According to THIS website my laptop should support 2048x1536. Can I get a higher resolution than 1280x800 or is that really the max?

You have to have Horiz and vertical scan rates which support the desired resolution. Also, the "display" subsection has to include the highest resolution mode you plan to use.

If the modelines in the log are the same as in xorg.conf, then something looks funny. Here is what gtf (utility to make modelines) generates for 1680x1050:
Quote:
# 1680x1050 @ 60.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 65.22 kHz; pclk: 147.14 MHz
Modeline "1680x1050_60.00" 147.14 1680 1784 1968 2256 1050 1051 1054 1087 -HSync +Vsync
One article I found suggests changing "60.00" to "60"

Also, 1600x1024 is not a standard mode---most common is 4:3, widescreens are either 16:10 or 16:9

Re: 1600x1024 resolution possible

Hi, what laptop is it? I can't believe laptop LCD is capable to display such resolution.
Your LCD is probably 1280x800 (as is mine) and that is the highest possible resolution.

Many Dell laptops have very high native resolutions. The OP should google for the exact model himself.

My old clunker Compaq Nc8000 goes to 1600x1200

OP seems to have 4:3 aspect---yours is 16:10

Note to replica: The site you linked describes the video card, not the monitor. Look at you laptop specs to see what the display can do.

I can be wrong, of course, i was just my opinion - 1280x800 is very common these days. And his BIOS tells that: "(II) RADEON(0): Panel Size from BIOS: 1280x800".

My laptop is a Gateway MX6445 with a ATI Radeon Xpress 200M.

The video portion of my Xorg.conf looks like this:

The laptop came with WinXP Media Center in 1280x800, and I never tried to change it. Windows is no longer on the laptop. Also Linux booted up for the first time in 1280x800 also.

The setting I'm trying to use is 1680x1050 @ 60hz, and that's the modeline I googled for. (I also removed the 1680x1024 and 1900x1200 modelines)

Ok so I looked up the LCD Screen which xorg refers to as "SEC3445"

Part # 103459
15.4" (33cm x 21cm ) [16:10]
WXGA 1280x800
TFT Active Matrix Ultra Bright

So yeah the video card does support 2048x1536, it's just the LCD screen doesn't.
