top shows contradicting information

Currently I have problems with an application with a memory leak. Below I pasted the output of top which shows that the app is using 16.3g of virtual memory. According to the top manual, VIRT = SWAP + RES.
That would mean that this app has swapped out ~16g. But how is it possible that at the same time top shows that there's no swap space in use? Where are the 16g?

Code:
Mem: 4057180k total, 2447168k used, 1610012k free, 286172k buffers
Swap: 8385888k total, 0k used, 8385888k free, 1870824k cached

PID USER PR NI RES VIRT SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ SWAP DATA COMMAND
 1227 ats 15 0 55m 16.3g 2500 S 0 1.4 0:52.85 16g 16g Cerebrus
