PPPOE implementation in Linux

Hello All

I want to implement PPPOE in Linux for my educational project. For that I
wanted to first understand the existing implementation code flow but
I am not able to progress much on this.
Is there any way to print the debug message of the pppoe code?

I want to put some printk statement and want to understand the code flow.

Please help me by giving some input for the following point.

1) How to invoke the current pppoe code?

My idea for implementing this project as follows

I will remove the existing PPPOE module and will insert module written by me and should be able to connect to internet. Is it ok for testing the module? Please help me if I am going in wrong direction.

Actually I did the following to understand the above .
I removed the pppoe and pppox module from the kernel and ran the
following command
"pppoe -A eth0" and ran the tcpdump. I thought as I have removed the
modules there will not be any PPPOE packet getting generated but it
was getting generate.
I am clueless.
Please provide some inputs on how to progress from here,

Thanks.

Hello somenathpal,

I think if you want to know what a program does, for example which libs are called and what they do, you should use the strace command.

And please explain what you mean with "I removed the modules from the kernel". As you know, when you remove a module with rmmod it will be loaded again as soon as it is been needed by a program.

Hello Markus,

Many thanks for the response.

I did not know this fact that module removed using rmmod will be loaded again as soon as it is been needed by a program.

Actually I am trying to write the PPPOE module for my educational project. My intention is to learn the Linux networking in kernel.

That's the reason I wanted to understand the code flow by putting some extra printk message. But I don't know how to invoke the current code.

I would request you all to give me some inputs so that I can get going on this.

Thanks.

Hi,

I think I can't help you with this, but I've reported this thread and asked the Moderators to move it to Programming http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/programming-9/, there are lots of people who can help (hopefully)
