"make install" kernel errors

Hi,

I'm used to download a kernel, configure and compile it but with there is no problem till I digit "make install", in the end of the procedure appears this:

if [ -r System.map -a -x /sbin/depmod ]; then /sbin/depmod -ae -F System.map 2.6.16.16; fi
sh /usr/src/linux-2.6.16.16/arch/i386/boot/install.sh 2.6.16.16 arch/i386/boot/bzImage System.map "/boot"
/usr/src/linux-2.6.16.16/arch/i386/boot/install.sh: line 54: /etc/lilo/install: No such file or directory
make[1]: *** [install] Error 127
make: *** [install] Error 2

What I have to do?
Please help me because I'm not so experienced to solve it on my own.

p.s. I use Arch Linux 0.7.1

sincerely

i would not recommend using a make install to install the kernel. instead do a make modules_install and then copy the bzimage manually to your boot partition and edit your bootlaoder configs manually. this way you know you will never have any nasty suprises if your new kernel fails.

And I, respectfully, disagree. The make install process should copy that bzImage file and rename it properly. If it does not, then the question becomes, "why not?"

Distributions may vary. Your particular Makefile thinks that you're using LILO as your boot-loader, and it expects to find /etc/lilo/install and it can't. So that's the root cause of your problem...

The cause, but not the solution!

It could be that... you intended to use LILO but haven't set it up right yet. Or, you could be using GRUB and the Makefile is incorrect by trying to set up LILO. None of us can tell by what you've posted.

Carefully go back through your installation instructions and see if you can determine just how you specify whether you want to use the LILO boot-loader or GRUB. You didn't give us any details whatsoever about what distro you're trying to use, or anything of that sort.

Hi,

You're right,I use GRUB, so in the end the best way is avoid "make install",
copying the just built kernel and editing menu.lst via emacs.
