How to install a bare kernel alone?

Hi
I want to install Linux kernel alone (with basic programs like bash, ls, mount, drivers etc) on a PC. And I don't want to use any Linux distributions. How will I do this? Can someone please advice?

Is there any way of repartioning a hard disk without disturbing existing data?

PC: HP, PIV

thanks

Try building a "Linux from Scratch"!
The core LFS is exactly what you are looking for. Its main advantage (and disadvantage) is that you build everything by yourself. i think it's cool .
