Building Kernel 2.6.28.1 under Ubuntu 11.10

Hi everyone,
I've been trying to build Kernel 2.6.28.1 aimed at the 486 architecture for a floppy linux distro project that I'm starting. However, whenever I try to build the kernel I get
Code:
  LD vmlinux.o
  MODPOST vmlinux.o
WARNING: modpost: Found 1 section mismatch(es).
To see full details build your kernel with:
'make CONFIG_DEBUG_SECTION_MISMATCH=y'
  GEN .version
  CHK include/linux/compile.h
  UPD include/linux/compile.h
  CC init/version.o
  LD init/built-in.o
  LD .tmp_vmlinux1
kernel/built-in.o: In function `mutex_lock':
(.sched.text+0x72c): undefined reference to `__mutex_lock_slowpath'
kernel/built-in.o: In function `mutex_unlock':
(.sched.text+0x736): undefined reference to `__mutex_unlock_slowpath'
make: *** [.tmp_vmlinux1] Error 1
This error. I've been Googling around and I can't find a solution. All help is very much appreciated.

Have you taken the advice given to you in the error? If you haven't I would suggest you do.

Also why such an old kernel as 2.6.28? It is not available on kernel.org so it is not officially supported anymore. Try 2.6.32 (which is in Ubuntu 10.04 and Debian 6 among many others because it is a long term kernel) or 2.6.35 or maybe even one of the 3 series

I'll build with that option as soon as I've got time to build again.

I downloaded the source from kernel.org :s I'm using the old kernel because I want the resulting kernel image to be as small as possible since it has to fit on a floppy with a compressed filesystem as well.
