2.4 kernel on Ubuntu?

Hi

In order to get some old software that is running that is 2.4 kernel dependent, I was wondering about getting/building a 2.4 kernel for Ubuntu 7.04 amd64, or would this be likely to break my system? (I don't want to break my system! Even using Ubuntu it took me long enough to post-install set up)

Although I am sure almost anything is *technically possible* on a linux system, I have never built a kernel before (I'm guessing there are no ready built 2.4 kernel images out there for Ubuntu 7.04 amd64?) and am wondering if this would be straight forward.

Alternatively, although I really would prefer not to repartition, would it be better if I made a spare partition and installed DSL/Slackware on it?

Thanks in advance.

2.4 and 2.6 are fundamentally different so most of the software you installed on your 2.6 kernel likely won't work on the older kernel. Essentially you'd need to reinstall your system with an older version of Ubuntu that had the 2.4 kernel. I'm don't use Ubuntu so don't know which version that was. For Fedora/RedHat the last version that had 2.4 was version 3 and with version 4 they went to 2.6 kernel.
