FYI: do not use the supplied FC1 config file, it will not work as the vanilla kernel source is not 100% compatible with this file. Also try accepting the defaults instead of answering no to all the prompts (bad idea).
I strongly suggest that you visit Fedora Legacy (
http://www.fedoralegacy.org/ ) and learn howto download/install/use yum to update your system before trying again. One of the many reasons is shown below.

It would be better to update to a supported version of Linux if you want to stay with the red hat family checkout CentOS or Scientific Linux along with Fedora Core. Both CentOS-3.X or SL-3.X are based on RHL9 (just like RHEL-3), still use the 2.4 kernel series, freely available, 100% binary compatible with RHEL-3.X and they are supported versions.
