Question [Fedora Core 1] Kernel 2.4.33.3 and XFree86 problem

Hi, guys!

I've just compiled kernel-2.4.33.3 under Fedora Core 1 using 'kernel-2.4.22-i386.config' and 'make oldconfig' (answered 'no' to all new options).

The kernel build and install were OK but when i try to boot Fedora Core 1 with the new kernel the system stoped booting when attempting to launch graphics environment (XFree86).

I also tried to boot Fedora Core 1 at bootlevel 3 and launch 'startx' but achieved the same result.

Any comment or suggestion?

Try again, this time tale the time to check the configuration.

FYI: do not use the supplied FC1 config file, it will not work as the vanilla kernel source is not 100% compatible with this file. Also try accepting the defaults instead of answering no to all the prompts (bad idea).

I strongly suggest that you visit Fedora Legacy ( http://www.fedoralegacy.org/ ) and learn howto download/install/use yum to update your system before trying again. One of the many reasons is shown below.

From: http://download.fedoralegacy.org/fedora/1/updates/i386/

kernel-2.4.22-1.2199.8.legacy.nptl.i686.rpm 05-Mar-2006 14:11 12M

It would be better to update to a supported version of Linux if you want to stay with the red hat family checkout CentOS or Scientific Linux along with Fedora Core. Both CentOS-3.X or SL-3.X are based on RHL9 (just like RHEL-3), still use the 2.4 kernel series, freely available, 100% binary compatible with RHEL-3.X and they are supported versions.

Thanks for your advice (but it does not seem that Fedora Legacy Project supports FC1). So do you mean that FC1 cannot be upgraded to kernel version higher than 2.4.22 from generic kernel source?

Yes all support has ended, but all the updates are still available.

FYI: Red Hat (and Fedora) typically backport fixes from the upstream (vanilla.org) and addes other tweaks to the kernels they supply and keep the same base version number. This means that there is no one-to-one comparision and nothing else. It is possible to install a 2.6 kernel (with some extra work) or build/install a 2.4 vanilla kernel if one desires.

The reason I suggested visiting Fedora Legacy is to get any of the many, many updates that are available for FC1 that you might be missing or need (bug fixes and such).
