Angry XFree BIOS errors

i have just installed mandrake 9.1 on a computer and when ever i try startx, it complains with the error :

[EE] BIOS modes not found, disabling BIOS

then it aborts

it does go into graphical mode for a few seconds before it exits. im am sure it would work if it didn't abort.

so, any help would be nice.

Uhmmm... going to need a little more of the log. That might be BIOS as in the mobo bios if you're using a vesa framebuffer, or it might be the card's bios, also... what's the video card?

Also what's the "device" section of your /etc/X11/XF86Config file look like?

Cheers,

Finegan

A few good tips for installing Mandrake 9.1 here:

http://www.mandrake.tips.4.free.fr/install.html

The BIOS settings are important to getting a successful installation.

From the log it looks like a successful load... weird, is the BIOS error line the last line after the mouse load?

What's your XF86Config file look like? Hopefully there are a ton of options above the card type, right? If not, you may just want to backup the current XF86Config and try and let X configure itself with:

X -configure

and then follow the next set of instructions...

at least we know now whatever its horking on is the video card's BIOS.

Cheers,

Finegan

ok, i did X -configure and its told me where the new config file was and how to test it. i tested it with XFree86 and it worked. after i closed XFree86. i saw it had still come up with the error "bios modes not found". it seems that the script startx is automaticly shuting down X. so do you know how i can fix this?

How is this comming for you?

I have the exact smae problem. The only thing I can tell is that it started after I installed the omniview (a mouse/keyboard/monitor switch) It's an omniview SE 4-port (Bekin).

Now... I had a few problems with that computer since I installed a second Ethernet card (for internet routing)

and the config is this:
Code:
# File generated by XFdrake.

    # By default, Mandrake 6.0 and later now use a font server independent of
    # the X server to render fonts.

The 'Module' section in my XF86Config-4 file has the line Load "glx" commented out. In its place is Load "/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.so". You could try this and see how it goes.

You could also try turning Display Power Management System (DPMS) off. To do this, insert a comment character (#) in the applicable line of your graphics card's 'Device' section, like so:

#Option "DPMS"

oops, late... I'm re-installing as I write... But thanks anyway... I will try it if it keeps failing (The re-install is about something else, some inconsitency in the RPM database that I could not solve)

Thank you very much.
