WiFi starts after power off/power on but not after reboot

I have my new Dell Inspiron Micro 3050 up and running Ubuntu-Mate 15.04. It is the best toy I have purchased in quite a while I am running it headless and connecting with vncserver and x11vnc depending on the situation. The WiFi card seemed to be recognized during the initial install - at least I did not have to manually add a restricted driver. Per the Before you post... thread, here is the output from lspci

04:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 0c)
And here is the problem...

When I first power on the PC, the WiFi will connect and allow me to ssh to the machine and launch the appropriate desktop with vncserver or x11vnc. However, if I execute a reboot I find that the WiFi will NOT connect. This of course makes it rather difficult to run the box headless and wireless.

I have the WiFi connection configured to [X] Automatically connect to this network when available and [X] All users may connect to this network. The WiFi network is running in Infrastructure mode, the SSID is NOT broadcast and security is set to WPA & WPA2 Personal - the best my router can do.

If I am in a state where the WiFi has not connected (e.g. after a reboot) I can connect an ethernet cable and access the machine in that manner. I can connect to the physical desktop with x11vnc, login and "Connect to Hidden WiFi Network" by clicking on the network icon on the panel. It works fine, I can disconnect and reconnect to my heart's content. The only issue is that it will not automatically connect after a reboot.

I have little experience with WiFi as most of my machines are hard wired except for a netbook which is usually connected to my gigabit wired network as well. I have the netbook on WiFi at the moment as I "borrowed" its cable for the new PC. It is running Ubuntu-Mate 15.04 as well. I can reboot it all day and it connects to WiFi every time. I used it as a model for configuring WiFi on the new PC and it appears that all of the settings are identical. Any help would be appreciated.

TIA,

Ken

Hi...

If you would, right after you reboot the system and before you connect manually, please open a terminal and post the entirety of...

Code:
dmesg
Hopefully, this will provide a clue as to why it's not connecting automatically. Also, please include the output of...

Code:
lspci -nnk | grep -i net -A2
This will provide a bit more details about your adapter.

Thanks!

To make this a little stranger...

Before running the tests above I had to recreate a WiFi connection as I had deleted the non-working one before making a Clonezilla image and setting up the machine in its headless configuration. I made the new connection using an x11vnc session. The latest connection WILL come back alive if I reboot using an ssh connection. It will not come alive if I reboot from a vncserver connection and x11vnc will not reboot the PC - I had to hit the power switch.

After restarting from vncserver I then connected with ssh and did a reboot. The WiFi came alive! It is a mystery to me. I guess I should just leave the ethernet cable connected to the machine.

Hi...

Unless I'm missing something, the entries above are the only thing I'm seeing concerning your adapter and I see nothing wrong. But I'm wondering what the dmesg report would look like if you posted one when the system is first booted, when the adapter automatically logs into your network.

Regards...

I wonder that as well. I just tried powering it down, unplugging the ethernet cable and powering it back on. I have tried this 3 times and the WiFi does NOT connect. If I plug in the cable and reboot the WiFi comes up. I will try some controlled experiments today if I get a chance. Top priority is fitting a new drive belt in my step-son's John Deere ZTR mower. I think figuring out the WiFi will prove to be the simpler task

Sorry I have not posted in a couple of days. I have not been able to get any consistent performance from this setup. Sometimes it will connect the WiFi after a reboot IF the ethernet cable is connected, sometimes not. Usually it will connect the WiFi at power on IF the ethernet cable is connected but not always. Rarely will it connect if the ethernet cable is NOT connected. I notice the "radio antenna" icon on the router flashing when the boot/reboot takes place so it seems like some attempt at communication is being made. I think I need to obtain and try a different router. This one is an old 11b and is rather slow even when it gets connected.

Thanks ardvark71 for your efforts and comments. If/when I spring for a new router (or borrow one) I will do some testing and will post any interesting results. In the mean time I have the little Inspiron Micro situated where it is connected by 1 GB ethernet.

Cheers,

Ken

Hi...

You're welcome, let us know how it turns out.

Maybe I missed it, but how is your network configured? wicd, networkmanager, /etc/network/interfaces?

Wifi can be quirky, especially if your device hasn't been around a while. Using the latest kernel, perhaps with github'd wireless driver and the latest firmware normally helps a ton. At least that's my experience with my unrelated realtek chipset. New firmware this month and it's almost stable now. Seven months after I got this laptop. Otherwise I use ethernet to avoid the annoyance.
