Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

WiFi Doesn't Connect to All Routers - Linuxmint 17.3 KDE

Hi all,
Linuxmint 17.3 KDE amd64, i7, 16GB, 2GB Nvidia. Sorry, not interested in upgrading. I can connect to most routers with no problem. I've been using this laptop and distro for about 3 years. But I have found that older routers don't allow connection. Or perhaps I have something mis-configured? Anyway, the Intel drivers/firmware appear to be the latest. I downloaded the latest from Intel, and the file dates in my /lib/firmware are newer than what I downloaded. Haven't found anything here that helps, but that could be b/c I'm using incorrect search criteria. Here is the output of various commands listed with the command, followed by the double underline, and it's output. I could not figure out how to look up info on the parameters section of the systool output. I have a feeling something there can be adjusted and it will work fine. Currently, /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi11n.conf is options iwlwifi 11n_disable=1. Previously, it was 8. Neither setting makes a difference. From command output, I get the feeling that the routers I canNOT connect to are older "abg" routers. Anything you can direct me to read about would be greatly appreciated. I have not encountered anything like this and have not idea what could be happening, but I do have a question:

These routers you can't connect to, do they show up in your network manager (whichever one you are using) and you can't connect, or do they not show up at all.

Look, routers have several choices about authentication. They can do it with no password, a WEP ore WPA password (which you have to have) or they can use more exotic things like PAP/CHAP where you're asked for a user/password and they maintain a userbase of allowed users.

The fact that you can't get onto some routers probably means you don't have everyone's password. My guess is that age of router has nothing to do with it.
