This is what I have as idendtified by redhat-configure-soundcard:
VT8233 AC97 Audio Controller
via82cxxx_audio

I had the same problem with soud not working.
(/dev/dsp)

I downloaded the alsa rpms:
alsa-kernel-0.9.0-fr0.rc7.2_2.4.18_24.8.0
alsa-lib-0.9.0-fr0.rc7.1
alsa-driver-0.9.0-fr0.rc7.2

(I got these by searching on rpm.pbone.net for alsa.)

I installed them, and then added the modules as instructed on
the alsa site:
modprobe snd-via82xx
modprobe snd-pcm-oss
modprobe snd-mixer-oss
modprobe snd-seq-oss

I create the .asoundrc per the new instructions on the alsa site:
pcm.snd-via8233 {
type hw
card 0
}

ctl.snd-via8233 {
type hw
card 0
}

I then started up xmms... and at first had no suond. I ran
the gnome-volume-controller and turned up all the levels
(they were at the bottom) and boom... I HAD SOUND!
Woo Hoo!

I hope this helps people!
