Hello all you Linux lovers. Ok here is my dilemma
I am running Mandrake 10.0 every time I plug in my USB mass storage it get auto detected and then I get two problems

1 – Even though it is running on USB 2.0 it is still too slow the transfer speed fluctuates from 32K to 400K

Then

2 – After the transfer is half way I get a massage saying that the USB storage is not there

Dos any know what is going on

what usb driver is actaully running? it's USB 2.0 compatible, but doesn't mean it's actaully runnign at that speed. once you plug the device in, see if ehci_hcd or (ohci_hcd or uhci_hcd) claims it. it'll only be at 2.0 speeds (ish...) if ehci picks it up. you might want to try removing whichever usb1.1 driver is loaded for your motherboard and try again.

you can get a much better idea of what;s going on through hotplug and the usb subsystem from the dmesg output they all create.

How is it possible to "force" ehci to pick up the usb device??

A have a similar problem....uhci is the drivers that picks up all usb device that I connect, so I will be at usb1.1 with a very very slow transfer rate but the usb device works!! But if the usb device is picked up by ehci, the link in /dev/ will not be created and the usb device will not work...

I tried a workaround that works, I let uhci pick the device them I mount it, but before any transfers I do
Code:
modprobe ehci_hcd
modprobe -r uhci_hcd
, with this done I will get very fast transfer ~30MB/s.
But it's boring to do this every time I won't USB2.0 transfers...

@all4tux
Post the interessing part of the dmesg output so it be more easy to solve your problem.

PS: I thought in putting this in another threat but I think here is better, we can solve two problems in one threat

This is what I'm asking myself.
I cannot get any 2.0 USB device get recognized with ehci-hcd module; instead it gets loaded with uhci. These are the relevant lines of dmesg when uhci is loaded:
Code:
usb 1-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 4
scsi6 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
usb-storage: device found at 4
usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning
  Vendor: ST320011 Model: A Rev: 3.10
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 00
SCSI device sda: 39102336 512-byte hdwr sectors (20020 MB)
sda: assuming drive cache: write through
SCSI device sda: 39102336 512-byte hdwr sectors (20020 MB)
sda: assuming drive cache: write through
 sda: sda1
Attached scsi disk sda at scsi6, channel 0, id 0, lun 0
usb-storage: device scan complete
But when I remove uhci-hcd module and, instead, load ehci-hcd, nothing happens when I plug in the device. dmesg doesn't say anything at all.
And the trick given by "DarkVenger" is useless in my case.
Anyone does know how to force to usb system working with ehci-hcd?
TIA

Regards
