cdrecord --scanbus
will give some info on scsi devices.
Is there any difference in the information before and after mounting (and unmounting) your camera?

Before disconnecting each time you should try:
(Depending on your distro you might need to do this as root)
eject -s /dev/sdXY
( eg: eject -s /dev/sda1)
Where XY == the specific device you had mounted up (naturally...)
This will "eject" whichever device you had mounted up making it safe to disconnect. I had to do this with my iPod to get it back to a normal screen before disconnecting. I'd imagine your camera is doing the same thing. Though likely you asked this question more than a year ago so you won't see this suggestion, but maybe somebody else will
