Underclocking my Athlon xp 3000. Should I and how?

Hey all,
While doing anything CPU intesive (compiling kernel, Gentoo, password cracker), I almost always wind up with a segmentation fault. I've come to the conclusion that my CPU may be overheating. I'm probably going to go and check the thermal goo and maybe add/replace it and some fans but in the mean time, should I underclock to be able to compile things? If so, how should I go about doing so?

Also if anyone knows of some tips on how I can cool down my CPU they'd be much appreciated.

Amd Athlon xp 3000 on an Asus A7N8X Deluxe mobo.

Do you have a temp reading for your processor? How hot does it get? Those Athlons can run pretty hot (I think the datasheets says no to exceed 85C). It could possibly be a number of things, ram is getting too hot, drawing more power then your PSU can give... debugging hardware is a pain in the booty.

I've pretty much eliminated the bad RAM idea...ran memtest overnight and switched out the ram.

actually they don't my XP3000+ runs at 2100mhz..and it's cool all the time..35ºC at max. that's kind of weird because my CPU doesn't worm up.
use the lmsensors to see the temp. the sensors needed are.i2c-nforce2 and asb100 at least for my a7n8x-e deluxe

I didn't mean in imply they always run that hot, I meant to imply that they are capable of running that hot. According to AMD's datasheets, the maximum die temperature is 85C on newer Athlon XP's, and was 90C on older Athlon XP's.

If it is overheating, then underclocking alone wouldn't lower your temp much (from 2 to 6 degrees Celsius) I think. If you really at it then you should lower voltage too, but that may result in general system instabillity.
So get better cooling, because underclocking won't help much and undervoltage will not let your computer run stable.

Hey guys, can anyone please try to walk me through step by step on aim or here on how to install and run lmsensors? I'm lost when it comes to anything that involves the kernel. Help would be super appreciated.
