Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

ultra-2 and ultra-3 SCSI drives on the same bus?

Is it possible to use an ultra-2 and an ultra-3 SCSI drive in the same bus?

I have a proliant 1850R with a 9.1GB ultra-2 drive and wish to add another 18.2GB drive, but it's an ultra-3 drive, and I am unsure weather it would be compatible.

I am using the four-bay backplane (the type that connects directly to the SCA connectors of the drives without the intermediate PCB-edge connector) with the motherboard's integrated SCSI controller.

Thanks!

Yes, it will work. The speed that you get from the Ultra-3 drive will depend on the card it's plugged into. If it's an Ultra-2 card, it will run at 80 MB/s max, if it's an Ultra-3 card the new drive will run at 160 MB/s and the Ultra-2 drive at 80.
