Trying to read hard drive from old system through a USB enclosure

Ok, here is the situation...

About a year ago I set up a ubuntu box. It was running great.

I dont know if this is what caused the original problem but I had the computer on while my electricity was turned up from 110 to 220 (or 240 i always forget). Later that evening I found the computer pretty much dead. Power supply kicked on but nothing happened. Getting to the bottom of it was the last thing on my mind as I was in the middle of turning my first floor into a pub. There it sat until today.

There is a file (expense spreadsheet) that I would like to grab off one of the drives connected to that pc because I now need it for tax purposes.

I recently purchased one of those $400 dell vista vostros to use in my new office. I tried to throw the drive containing the data I need into a usb enclose but vista only wants to format it...

Next I downloaded ubuntu livecd 810 and gave it a spin. (I had never tried the livecd but must say that it is very impressive)

So ubuntu 8.10 livecd is up and I can see the 250.1gb drive but it will not mount it...

Im far from a linux guru but I am a lifelong geek so I can find my way around with good instructions. This is the error I get when i try to open the drive to view its contents...

"Cannot mount volume
Unable to mount the volume

the I/O errors are a bad sign. I suspect you have either a bad USB enclosure or a damaged drive. However, the drive worked well enough for Linux to identify the reiserfs file system, so perhaps the drive isn't totally wasted.

If I were you I'd begin by imaging the drive using dd (if possible). Then try fsck. If that works, great. If that doesn't work, then you'll need to try spinrite, which will cost you $89 to purchase but will recover the drive if it can be recovered.

Hi,

First, place your long listings within the vbcode tags to make things cleaner thus easier to read. Just edit your post(s) then cut & paste within the code tags # or quote.

You should backup the hdd if the data is that important. Apparently you didn't. You could use the LiveCD to boot then just attempt to run a fsck on the unmounted hdd.

If that fails you might try 'test-disk'.

The 'SystemRescueCd' is a great tool to have on hand.

The error seemed like something user created. It came to me while making breakfast that I should have checked the drive connector pins i moved yesterday.

I set them to 32gb clip master instead of 16 head master.

Switched the pins and problem solved...
