trying to install Peppermint Ice on Dell optiplex, unbelievably slow
New Hard Drive, hast 1.75 GBS Ram, Tried XP got Blue Screen, Tried Fedora 14 got white screen, the live Peppermint Ice disc boots but I can barely move the mouse and still cant right click, open to install to Hard Drive. I thought It was the Video Card, took that out, and using onboard memory card, Dell Diagnostic boot disc seems everything is fine. What is going on with my system. Need to load Linux so I can get Lamp going and host multiple websites, so also I am thinking once installed (hopefully sometime this century) I will need to set Virtual IP's as well,
Can some one help me solve why my system is so slow???
Well I am going to try a different hard-drive because I get the same issue on the a 2nd machine of exact make/model. It is dell optiplex 745 or 740 can't remember off the top of my head.
I am going to put in a different Hard Drive RAM and Video Card. I will post what happens next.
Your symptoms could also be explained by funny power supply voltages.
Here's the problem/ 5V has to be 4.8 - 5.2V; 3.3V has to be even tighter. Now they might be exactly that at the psu, but then losing voltage across aging board plugs or tracks inside. If any of the board plugs are warm, that's bad, as it means they are dissipating power and consequently drop[ping voltage, especially on power surges.
Can you disable cpus, or cores and see if it improves?
