Trouble with wireless driver rtl8192eu and Slackware 14.2

I downloaded the rtl8192eu (beta) driver for the tp-link TL-WN823N v3.8 USB Wireless from the TP-LINK website. I 'make'd the module per the instructions included in the download. lsmod shows the module loaded. However, 'lsusb' does not show this device at all. And of course, no wlan0 get created.

Why does this device not show in 'lsusb'?

Slackware64 14.2 kernel 4.4.182

Lsusb -has- to show it, regardless of any driver loaded. So if the dongle isn't broken, I would guess the issue is rather some internal usb hub not being properly configured. First try if any other usb device is detected.

I've tried a different USB port on this computer and I've also tried this dongle on two other Linux computer (all Slackware 14.2 and kernel 4.4.182). lsusb does not show this device on ANY of these computers. I'm doubtful the kernel version should make a difference with lsusb, should it? Yet others appear to have used this successfully with Slackware (https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...ce-4175592117/).

I guess I'll return this device and try to find one that works. I do have an Aetheros chipset USB wireless, that did work, but it drop out all the time, so I'm trying to replace. Suggestions?

Sounds like it is broken or does not follow the usb spec then? Maybe 'dmesg' will tell you more. Probably another stick is the easiest option

Seems like the module loaded but the hardware is not. Does your Kernel have configured all the pre-requisites to handle that driver? You don't only need the driver, you need a Kernel with various suiting configurations compiled in or modules activated (before) loading the driver.

I don't know all the options needed for that, but surely something like network over usb etc. I would start investigating that first. It involved alot of work.

Also, is the firmware loaded properly?

It seems something went wrong with your driver installation.

What does it say in dmesg?

boot the system, plug the usb in and look at the last several lines of dmesg
