trouble instaling video driver on debian

auto install goes o untill after the run program unpacks, the i get 4 warning messages and it will not install.
I am out of x mode(ctrl,alt,delete) and loged in as root.
my video card is supported, i have confermed that(pci id 0x002d)
one of the warning messages is that it is still in x mode. how?

you hit CTRL+ALT+F1, log in as root, do ps aux | less, find the process id of the xserver, hit Q, type kill 1234, where 1234 is the process id for the xserver. CTRL+ALT+DELETE reboots the machine, so I don't think you did that. CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE restarts the x server. So, after the x server stops, it runs again. You have to manually kill the xserver.

my mistake the first site i viewed said the pc id number was certified, but later i found it was not coverd. another stupid newbe mistake.
not enough resherch....
