you hit CTRL+ALT+F1, log in as root, do ps aux | less, find the process id of the xserver, hit Q, type kill 1234, where 1234 is the process id for the xserver. CTRL+ALT+DELETE reboots the machine, so I don't think you did that. CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE restarts the x server. So, after the x server stops, it runs again. You have to manually kill the xserver.
