ok, just wanted to make sure.
you should look at your log files (maybe /var/log/Xorg.0.log) but also the one that is created when the kernel boots (i think it's accessible with dmesg) if you find something related. you should grep the files for either the vendor, or the kernel module if any, or the driver (synaptics?) or some hardware code.
just as a quick example, i'm at my desktop right now and i don't have a touchpad, but a logitech usb keyboard & mouse, so i
Code:
dmesg | grep -i logitech
and get some results.
they don't tell me much. i try
Code:
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep -i logitech
and get much more. amongst other things i find out that the evdev kernel module is taking care of the keyboeard & mouse. i try
and see that in fact it's being loaded.
i think there's at least one more log file (or other way to get info about your setup) that i missed here, but you get the general point: you're collecting evidence from a crime scene, trying to find that one bit that gives you proof.
