thinkpad t23 bios settings

I use an old Thinkpad T23, The original 20 Gb Hard-disk stopped
to work. I replaced with an other 60 Gb Hard-disk.

I have tried to install on the hard-disk Upup-4.7.6.iso.
The installation goes well untill trying to install
grub. Grub refuses to install on /dev/sda

Grub says that sda is busy. I have looked on the bios setups
but I cannot figure out what must be changed.

I will be glad for reveiving propositions about what to do.

What is "Upup-4.7.6.iso."? After you downloaded this iso file, did you burn it to CD/DVD as an image file? If Grub refuses to install on sda, what does it do? error messages? what happens? Are you booting the Upup from a CD you copied it to, changed your BIOS so that CD is set to first boot priority? What else (other operating systems) do you have on your computer, if anything?

I will check by trying to redo.
I started by using the CD-rom diskette.
No other operetion systems on the
Hardisk.

I return later on with more details.

Two things...

What about trying a live boot of one of the other linuxs for old hardware, and then installing from the live-cd?

Why do you think that the problem is the BIOS and its settings? Have you installed the latest BIOS you can find; IBM is better at support than many others.

I assume the T23 doesn't boot from the CD-ROM, therefor the use of the diskette, but that should have no effect on Grub. Can you see the HDD when you boot a live-cd?

Fist a snip from dmesg

sda: sda1 sda2 sda3

Furthermore

Following have been done:

1
Puppy Universal installer. sda ATA FUJITSU MHR2040A, size 37.2.GiB,
/dev/sda3

During the installation process the setup was starting automatically
from CD-rom drive (ie sr0)

The installer setup grub. I was OK acccording to menu.lst,
it poited to start sda3.

2
After installation changing to boot from hard-drive.

Following text apeared:

Intel (R) Boot Agent Version 4.0.22
Intel Base-Code, PXE-E61 (Build 083)
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel PXE ROM
Operating System not found

I must ask here what cable is the system searching?

3
I tried to look around in the setup directory, finding:

RFID Security Chip
-Common Setting Disabled
- Gate through detection Disabled
Window part on the right
Item Specific Help
You should select this when you saw the sewcurity error
(0193 or 0194) and you want to recover from this
situation

IBM Security Chip
- Current Setting Disabled
Window part on the right
Password and Encryption key are cleared.
Post Error 195 and 196

4
After rebooting a trial with keying 0193 and when scrolling stopped
keying 0194.

After that 195 and 196 in both cases a lot of scrolling but no
reading of grub.

5
returning to use Thinkpad by starting it with Puppy 4.7.6

I will also try other alternatives
