Suggestions please, 700Mhz FC6 & Windows ME, Need new laser printer

I want a new laser printer (at least 600dpi) for my 700Mhz Fedora 6 box.

I also print from a Windows ME box.

The printer will replace a Okidata OL400e and be on a parallel port of a print server on my LAN.

Is there such a thing anymore as a printer that only puts a light CPU load on a computer?

The HP printers I've looked at (1018, 1020) use ZjStream protocol and require Ghostscript running on the computer.

The Brother HL2040 is a GDI printer and so will it take lots of CPU time also?

However, I am tempted to upgrade to a xx GigHz box for Fedora. ....

Or should I check the local printer repair shop for a rebuilt HP instead of buying a current 'WinPrinter'?

Thanks,

Does anyone still make printers with parallel port connections?

I have a cheapie Samsung mono laser here with a parallel port connector, but it is a couple of years old. Current Samsungs (mono and colour) are good value and network models (with ethernet connectors) are also not expensive. Needed a bit of dickering around to get the right driver for linux.

Postscript would be better if you can afford it. Maybe you can find a used HP or Apple Laserwriter with ethernet if you have a good local dealer.

Thanks for your help

Thanks Robhogg, and maroonbaboon.

A friend gave me an Okidata 610e/PS with level 2 postscript.

However, with each postscript job printed, the Okidata kicks out an extra page with the same error message.

I think something is configured wrong somewhere and will post the text from the sheet in a few days.
