Question strange problem with SB PCI 16 soundcard

Hi,
After having no luck getting my old Ensoniq card to work, I went and bought a new Creative Labs SB PCI 16. I figured it was a popular one and that Linux would have no problem configuring it. Well, it was recognized by Linux, and I thought my pryers were answered, but not quite. Here's the deal. When I first boot up and sign on as a user, a few seconds pass and I here a slight click
from my speakers, but no sound . If I open the volume control applet and play with the sliders, I will suddenly hear buzzing, and viola! sound . This has to be done each time I start the computer. Any Ideas?

What distro are you using? If it's RH or Mandy, or Suse (I think), then drop out of X and run sndconfig

In Redhat 8.0 you should be able to run sndconfig by just opening a shell as root and typing sndconfig, I had trouble running sndconfig when I was in X windows with a terminal, I had to sign out and sign in to just a shell as root in order to do it.

For some reason sndconfig does is not loaded as a standard package in RH8. I, too, was having sound problems--you have to install it as an "extra" from the CDs.

Oh, and SoundBlaster is one of the options, so you should be able to get up and running in no time...

If you boot straight to a GUI, then you should open a terminal/console (the thing that looks like the ol' Windows DOS box) and type init 3. You should, however, install the program as per JPohara's instructions before doing this. When you type init 3, it'll close X (the GUI portion of Linux) and drop you back to a text console. You might need to login again... I can't remember (I default to RL 3, so I've not used init for quite a while ). In order to run sndconfig and have it setup your soundcard properly, you should run it as root, so either login as root (bad) or login as a normal user and use su root to temporarily become the root user (good).

HTH
