Sound refuses to play on Audigy 4 after alsaconf in Debian Etch

I ran alsaconf under root, and the configuration reported no problems. I ran speaker-test, tried playing an Ogg Vorbis file in xfmedia, and playerd a CD using cdtool - no sound each time. The CD was being read and stopped without problems in the last example, so it's not a drive problem.

Any suggestions on how to get my headphones blasting again?

I had a problem like that before where everything seemed to be working but no sound was actually coming out. In my case I had digital speakers and needed to turn on digital output with the alsamixer application.

So, check to see if you have digital speakers/headphones. Your settings have to match your hardware or they won't work. Make sure they are plugged into the right jack while you're at it. Also, check to see if something is muted in alsamixer.

I've unmuted every channel in alsamixer, and every volume is set to at least 70. Still no sound from xfmedia or cdtool (cdplay). I'm using a pair of regular, non-digital headphones and they are plugged into the right jack.

Any other suggestions?

Well, the plot just thickened a bit. I was able to pick a line out of the boot log that said something like "probing emu10k1 - error -12". When I get into X and run alsamixer, the card seems to revert to my onboard sound card regardless of what I set it to in alsaconf. Sound still refuses to play, regardless of the volume levels.
