sles12 , connect to wifi. urgent

Hi All,

I have installed sles12 along-with win 10 on my laptop.
I want to connect internet via wifi.

Please anyone can provide me details steps which I can follow and setup wifi connection.

I tried to google, but unfortunately I didn't relate sles12. There are forums regarding openSuSE. I did follow those but what they says doesn't find in sles12.

I tried in yast2> network > add> wireless > wlan0.
Don't know how to proceed further.
And even i can't find is it detecting wifi hardware or not.

Please provide me any blog link if available or any video.

You need iwtools, firmware for your wifi & a driver. Also wpa_supplicant if you want security. Post the output of iwconfig. Also look for your wifi card in lspci or lsusb and show us that bit.

Your wifi might be that Intel network controller device 3166. No sign of it in lsusb? There are usb.ids & pci.ids that may need updating in /usr/share, & /usr/share/hwdata google for the, I have a script update-pciids in slackware (It probably just calls wget).

You've no driver for it, so it's not showing in iwconfig. So your course is
1. Find out WTF your wifi card is - go back to manufacturer spec if necessary.
2. Make sure a kernel module or other driver is installed. Rebuild the kernel if needed.
3. Then we get to configuring it.

You're using SuSE Enterprise 12 right? The best place for a quick, accurate answer would be SuSE Support...SLES12 is a commercial, pay-for distro and as such, you're paying for their support/help. If you're not paying/going to pay for SLES12, the best option would be to NOT use it. You're only going to get patches/updates for a very short trial period. After that, your server is going to wind up being insecure and unstable pretty quickly.

And are you building a SERVER or a DESKTOP machine?? Because distros like SLES and RHEL are typically used on back-end servers, and they don't have wifi, bluetooth, sound, or sometimes even KEYBOARDS attached to them. Support for 'consumer' hardware like wifi is typically lacking and/or a bit more difficult to make work. Loading a consumer distro like openSUSE Leap or Mint would probably let your wifi just plain work out of the box, and you'll be getting online packages/updates for free.

This is a copy of a closed thread. In the other thread the OP claimed he didn't want to pay for support.

Did you web-search, from your lspci in #3 (instead of sles/suse!): linux 3166 driver ?

Study the concept of kernel (&drivers) vs. a 'distro'. (Same driver might be used on many distros!)

Try/Use VirtualBox.org on your Win10, to eliminate driver problems.
(It can make running Linux as simple as "clicking on an 'app'"! See osBoxes.org)

Spend some time reading LQ: Use the lqSearch, for the word "urgent" (esp. in Titles), to learn how it is considered "impolite".

Please understand that: just being handed/given answers ("fish"), won't help you learn ("how to fish"), esp. for future work.

Sincere wishes for success.

The other was closed.
*I* easily could have fallen into posting a contentious Thread as this
See: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...9/#post5730830 @rtmistler
At the risk of my getting scolded here, I don't understand the psychology of why n00bs get so strongly scolded for using trial/demo copies of commercial linux, to learn[?].

It's a bad habit that will inevitably lead to trouble. If a user actually might want to make the purchase, and isn't planning to just run the trial version forever, that's one thing.

I know SLES is enterprise version of suse. I had some training, they provided this iso. So, I installed it in my laptop. I faced this issue and want to resolve it. I did web search before asking question. But I am new to linux, I was not able to understand. Because of all your reply, i have at-least some understanding now.

What I understand yet, my os is not able to detect wifi hardware cause of firmware is not installed properly.

I have Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 3165, machine is lenovo ideapad 500. SLES12 what I installed has kernel version 3.12.28.4.
From some blog I found my wifi chipset is not compatible with my kernel version. I think this might be problem. Even I am not finding firmware of kernel 3.12.

Someone suggest to install backport too.

Now, I am going to try backport installation. If its work than good else I will arrange higher level kernel sles. And try once again.

I will definitely going to use OpenSuSE in the end. But I don't want this issue unresolved by me. Thanks all for support.

So if you've had training, who is the 'they' that provided you with the ISO? Did 'they' also tell you that this is a commercial, pay-for distro designed for servers? They must have said such things in this training class, and if you did web searches before posting, that would have told you what you were dealing with.

Right...because, AGAIN, SLES is a pay-for distro, and you're not paying. You will not get access to the online repositories. And again, as said before, SLES is designed for SERVERS, not workstations/desktops. Servers don't use wifi, and support will be limited. AGAIN, you need to load openSUSE Leap or another distro like Mint.

Who suggested this, where??? No one on this site in any thread you've opened/posted in as far as I can see. Again, wifi may not be supported *AT ALL*, and trying to force this to work isn't going to be simple for a new user. And given that you just said you're going openSUSE, why on earth would you waste hours/days of effort to do something that could be fixed in 30 minutes by a fresh install of a workstation suitable OS? If you're just learning, load something that works and learn from there.
