Ungh. Well, this is tumbleweed, 4.9 should arrive shortly. But me and Dtrace / ftrace kernel debugging ... well ... probably not, I'd be way out of my depth. The drive is quiet right now anyhow. The backup went by without no hassle btw...
I find that it is mysqld... whose parent is akonadiserver, which doesn't always terminate when it should, and keeps reopening its files. The key I find is when aknondadiserver has a parent pid of 1, then that process is usually out of bounds.

Now, attribute 184 says that one of my disks is "dying immediately" but it is doing that since half a year or so. Using seagate's "seatools" results in "everything roger" and SMART will be "not triggered" (or so).
In short the manufacturer contradicts smart, and since he cheated with the parameters he should know -- hopefully.

Thanks for the Information, I'll watch for mysql then. I killed akonadi though, when I last had that Problem but nothing changed then. Maybe mysql was still chugging away...

I killed mysql. "Heart" still beating. I killed akonadi. No change.
Just as a matter of interest, with your 'heart' 'beating'try running
Code:
sync
which should flush writes to disk. At least we might gather if it's reading, writing, or both.
Also try rereading this thread. I personally feel most issues are sorted inside 8 posts, unless there's poor information or other confusion( e.g too little/much information, not trying advice). This is 28 posts; The answer could be in the thread.

Will do both (sync and re-reading). Heart beats only every few weeks or so, will be back then.
<edit> Re-read and noticed that I didn't try "relatime" in fstab. Problem is, when the "heart beats" and I umount its Partition and re-mount it with relatime what do I provoke with that? And if I do edit fstab as a precaution and it works how will I be sure, since there are so large lags between occurrences of this "problem"? </edit>
Will the explicit use of relatime change things?</edit 2>
<edit 3> ...just fount the option "lazytime" in the fstab enry of the Arch Wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fstab. It keeps the changes of the time stamp in memory until synced. Now that sounds interesting. </edit 3>
Ext filesystems keep updating times - access times or the like every 5 seconds; relatime moves it out to 15 seconds; noatime kills the habit. It doesn't affect rogue processes, but the disk cache should soften that.
