Serial PIC programmer, but no serial output on my laptop

Hello!
I've got a PIC programmer with a serial input port, but my Asus laptop has got not serial port (but there's a parallel port).
Should I use a USB-to-serial or a parallel-to-serial adaptor (but I'm not sure whether there is a standard mapping between parallel-port and serial-port pins)?
If I use the USB one, what's the device I should write to?
Thanks!
