Serial ATA Not Detected cfdisk or fdisk

I have checked other threds and have not found an answer to my issue. I have a 300gig serial ata drive connected to the 1st sata connection on my motherboard. The bios finds it with the ide option set, although there is an error saying that the bios isn't installed for the fasttrack controller. I currently have windows xp installed on it. I had to press f6 and install the via sata drivers via floppy. All was well for the windows install. When I attempted to install slackware 10.2 the fdisk /dev/sda or the cfdisk returned an error saying that there is no harddrive found. I have tryed a few other /dev/hdd, /dev/hda, etc. but to no avail. dmesg | grep hd finds the drive located somewhere that doesnt have a /dev/ in it. I am sort of confused as how to get fdisk to reconize the disk. My motherboard is an A8V Delux version. Any help would be highly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi. You did boot with the sata.i kernel, right? That just should work...

I totally appreciate your help. I was starting to get discouraged since a-lot of people have read this post and no one would reply. sata.i boot=/root /dev/sda worked for cfdisk to reconize the disk. I am not sure of how lilo will react to installing in the mbr but that is a question for later. Thanks again for the information.
