Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Post RT61 Drivers Wake On Magic Packet

Hello,

I'm currently on Windows... There never has been option to turn on magic packet, wake on pattern, etc. capability within Windows so far, at least for my wi-fi card. As far as I can remember it wasn't even available in Linux. However, I remember I did something (back in 2015-2016), some sort of tweak with the kernel that would instruct the Wi-Fi card not to go to sleep even when the PC was shut down, and this worked within Windows also even though there wasn't "Wake on magic packet" capability in the card's options. All of this allowed me to wake my PC whether on the same workgroup or by using the public IP.

Does anyone experienced know how to make RT61 (Turbo) wake on magic packet?

Thank you for your time.

- Darko

Since the WoL is sent before the OS boots it's not an operating system feature. Find the manual for your motherboard and see whether it supports it. As a warning my MoBo sees any PCI activity as WoL so I can't use it.

WOL is usually a BIOS feature. In theory it's all fine and clever. No product will ever be held up if WOL doesn't work well enough. In practise it's usually an endless PITA, especially if you have dual boot. So once a research guy can demonstrate wake on lan on some OS, that's enough to get it out the door.

For wake on lan, your box should be on suspend or standby with drivers & firmware loaded. Standby is a joke, using 90% power of being on. So test it, grok the logs and post the juicy bits. If there's no juicybits, suspect your bios and give full hardware/distro details.
