Redhat lcd refresh rates out of my control

I am running RH9.0 on an IBM Netfinity 3000 server. The video is probed as a S3 Trio3D, running on a 17" LCD (viewsonic VG700b). The display is capable of 56-75 Hz refresh rate, and those values are correctly placed in the XF86Config file.

However, NOT MATTER WHAT settings I place in the config file attempting to set the refresh rate to 60 HZ @ 1280x1024, X will 'ignore' the settings and ALWAYS (unless and error is generated for a bad config file) run at 1280x1024 @ 87.2 HZ (as read by a CRT plugged in for troubleshooting purposes).

I have made MANY adjustments to Modelines and Monitor specifications, but X always starts in the same resolutions at 1280. If I start at 1280x960, the refresh rate goes back to 60, as with any other resolution below 1280x1024.

I have also searched google and this board for some solutions and I have found similar issues, but i use the solutions provided and X never run in anything but 87.2 Hz.

WHAT CAN I DO?!??! This is making me nuts.

i know's it's not an ideal solution, but what about trying 16 bit color?

I don't think the video card will support 1280x1024 at 24 bit color anyway. 16 bit is fine with me, and 16 bit is the setting that I have been using all along.

I worked on it some more today, and no matter what i do, the video card ALWAYS outputs 1280x1024 at ~85 Hertz...

I would normally like the higher refresh rate as well, but as I mentioned in the subject of this post, this display is an LCD. And, as little as I like it, the LCD can only accept signals from 55 to 70 Hz.

Thanks for all of your help, but in the end I decided to start testing the Fedora Core .95 release, and i ended up using the s3virge driver as opposed to the vesa driver. I now have control over the resolution and the refresh.
