How do I configure a realtek 8139 card (ethernet) with Redhat 8.0?
And is Redhat 8.0 in Beta? Is there a better version for someone super new, like me? I picked redhat because there is so much documentation about it. So far I have found out that rt8139's are tricky. But I have nothing to go on.
If Redhat doesnt automatically detect it, which it should since its a pretty popular card, you could always detect it manually with "modprobe 8139too" without the "". This should make the system detect it. After that check in whatever network configuration tool they have. Redhat 8.0 is the newest release of Redhat. Good Luck
i'm not sure how RedHat handles this, but I can not imagine that rtl8139 are "tricky". I've recently put 2 of them on my Debian box without any problem.

I'll tell you right now that redhat works just fine with those cards. You can try running kudzu to find it also, but consider the possibility that the card is bad. Try it in another box if you have access.
Have you tried turning off the windows-esque plug and play feature in BIOS? I think this is what did it for me. I had the same problem. I can't remember exactly what fixed it, but the 8139 another card are now recognized that weren't seen the first time. I was shocked that it didn't recognize such a popular NIC card.
I think I had to re-install RH8.0, select the "upgrade" option and it worked the second time, after I disabled the plug-n-play BIOS thingy... same with BeOS. Wish I remembered the exact details.
Probably not the most astute way of solving the problem, but it worked for me.
Good luck, Charles
