i'm a linux newbie and have no idea how to get my on-board cmpci 8738 sound card to work
i'm using mandrake 9.1 and have very little experience using it, so far i have had no problems when i have installed other drivers for the graphics and other bits
i really want my sound to work as music is one of the most thing i use my pc for is music and games
Goto the ALSA page www.alsa-project.org. I had the cmpci 8738 on my old mobo running Red Hat 9. I found the alsa drivers worked perfect for the 8738 regardless of linux distro. Just follow the read me on how to get the drivers installed and working. It's not that bad.
They seem to have changed the way the page looks. I went to the soundcard matrix and tried to click on CMEDIA to get you the link to post but it keeps showing the same card - not cmedia. But pretty much download all of those files on the main page and build / install in sequence....driver -> Lib -> etc.
That's ok. Once you have downloaded the driver (just to get started here) and everything else, extract the driver and cd to that directory. Do a "make" then (if all goes well and there is ZERO errors) "make install". Do the same for the lib and the rest. Next go into the module.conf file in "/etc/" and edit the file to include the cmpci module. It's been a while since i have messed with my other computer. Do what you can and i'll install Mandrake 9.1 and Alsa on my old comp. to see how it goes.
**Edit (like 3 sec's later :-D ) .....u gotta be root to do "make install"
