Printer ignores paper size settings

My Samsung ML-1750 laser printer ignores all paper size settings and treats every job as if it were for Letter size. Thus if I print a Legal sized file on Legal paper, what is printed is truncated to fit Letter dimensions.

This is a printer specific problem. My Epson Stylus C42UX inkjet connected to the same box and also using CUPS handles differing paper sizes fine.

This is not, however, an application specifc problem. If I set the printer´s paper size to Legal in the CUPS web admin tool, create a PostScript file of Legal dimensions (legal.ps) and print it (¨lpr -o PageSize=Legal legal.ps¨) with legal paper in the printer, the printed result is truncated to fit on Letter paper.

I have also tried:

* printing via xpp and setting the paper size to Legal
* setting the $PAPERSIZE env variable to Legal (env PAPERSIZE=¨US-Legal¨) prior to printng
* uninstalling the printer, restarting CUPS, and reinstalling
* each of the different drivers for this printer available under CUPS
* the manufacturer´s PPD supplied with the printer (printerdrake balked, saying the PPD was invalid, so I forced it)
* installing a second instance of the printer with Legal set as the paper default, and printing from it
* RTFM and STFW (naturally)

I´m using Mandrake 10.0 official with the alternate 2.4.25-2mdk kernel and the stock cups-1.1.20-5mdk RPM. I obtain the same results whether I use Mandrake´s tools to configure the printer or if I install Samsung´s Linux Print Package included on the printer´s CD. When I was running Mandrake 8.2, Samsung´s package played nicely with CUPS and all worked well.

What else should I be trying to get my laser printer to work with more than one paper size?

TIA,
Warren
