Print job doesn't get to the printer

Howdy. I've got a problem with my Lexmark X73 in Mandrake 9.1. Print jobs don't seem to get to the printer. Mandrake seems to recognize my printer and seems to be using the correct driver. When I try to print, I get a quick message confirming that a job is being sent off to the X73...and then nothing happens. There is definitely a working USB connection here, because XSane works fine, and I've scanned with it. I used the printer utility program included with Mandrake to check the status of the printer. It gave me a 'permission denied' message. I changed permission using chmod 666 /dev/lp0 (i think that was it) and tried again. This time the problem was 'I/O error' or something. Anyway, maybe /dev/lp0 isn't the right place to send print jobs? Any help would be appreciated. I can also provide as much info as required, if this is not enough.
