Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Pre-purchase hardware nerves

Hi folks,

I'm a newbie so forgive my ignorance on posting etiquette.

I'm just about to purchase various parts to build a PC to run what can best be described as large numerical simulations for my uni project. I intend to install Linux (probably RH9.0).

***It would be kind if you could scan the list of hardware and highlight any positive/negative concerns I should be aware of.***

Mobo:
Gigabyte GA-7N400 Pro2

CPU:
XP2800+

Mem:
DDR PC2700 2x512MB to run as Dual Channel

Graphics:
Mentor GeForce4 MX440 64MB 8xAGP

+ other innocuous bits and bobs like HDD, FDD, DVD-ROM, etc...

Many thanks,

Martin (UK)

Can't see any obvious problems with your setup there, NVidia linux support is very good.

The one thing you may like to check is compatibility issues surrounding any on-board peripherals (sound, etc...) on your mobo. No linux support for any peripherals won't stop the system for working, it just means they'll be dead hardware.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the pointer, Taiyo. I know the mobo includes various different chipsets to support sound/LAN etc... but I didn't consider looking at these further.

I'm off to do a bit more digging!!!

Thanks again.

Update: if you're interested...

Realtek.com.tw seem to have linux drivers for both of the chipsets on the mobo:

Realtek 8110S Gigabit Eth, and the Realtek ALC650 CODEC.
