Sorry this isn't really a linux related question, but u guys seem to provide good help, so i thought u might be able to help me.
my power supply has gone, and since I’m planning to upgrade my computer in the near future i was wondering weather i should go, 300w, 350w or 450w power supply, i plain on upgrading to a motherboard that supports amd duron and amd xp cpu's but i haven't reserched that much on which motherborad i will get yet.
I also need to ask what brand of power supply i should look for as well as the wattage should i be looking for and how much would i be expected to pay, i don't see the point in getting something that’s going to stuff up my machine.
Power Supply? I wouldn't really spend alot of time on that. Go to AMD's website, they will point you towards some AMD approved retailers. I got a 300w AMD approved for about 20 bucks. I would suggest getting 300 or more. 450 might be too much unless you are going to be powering a helleva tower/server. But in reality there is no such thing as too much power. So don't worry about that. Get the most for you buck.
Another thing to thnk of offhand might be to not re-cycle your case, the AMDs run hot and you might want something with a lot of airflow. PSUs are usually cheaper if you get them with a case anyway.
sweet thanks for the help, i forgot amd had a list , i don't think airflow should be too much of a problem i've got a full tower case and theres heaps of room for fans
Newer AMD chips are not that power hangry as previous Athlons (K-7), and if you put a good cooling fan on it it should be fine, as for a power supply concider 350W it is enough to drive Athlon XP 2000+ plus all ordinary hardware (HD, CD-ROM, CD-RW, etc)
