Pinnacle PCTV card with Bt878 chipset - picture - no sound

I am desperately trying to get the TV to work in Slackware. I have all the drivers set up bttv and sound works in other apps.

However, there are a couple of problems.

Xawtv shows pictures, but no sound. I get static (white noise) but no sound.
Secondly scantv scans only a few channels and not all. Since my country is not listed in the freq tab I have to use scantv with the -a option.

Any experienced people? I searched for this everywhere and I cannot seem to find an answer.

In a surprising development, I booted into Gentoo after a *long* time today and found that TV works perfectly!

Amazing. KDETV and all channels configured and sound works! Now I need to figure out whether this is a Xawtv problem or a configuration mismatch.

From what I can gather, nothing is wrong with the drivers. Rather it seems to be scantv's limitation in not being able to tune the channels properly which caused the static instead of the audio signal
