If you have another box available, you can try the Asmedia card there and see if you get the same result. There might be some interaction between the card firmware and the motherboard bios. I did find a firmware update dated 5/02/22 that you can download from here:

Installation is windows only AFAICT. Interestingly, the update notes seem to indicate some issues with Intel600 series chipsets. In fact, the notes for the update state:

Please make sure you are using Non-Intel 600series chipset motherboard to update the firmware.
Accordingly, you would need a box with a non-600 series motherboard with windows installed in order to do the update! As far as what controller to get, go for one of recent vintage that's readily returnable and google for linux compatibility.
